Lets Play Chop Chop

In Roald Dahl's  short story, "Man From the South", has a protagonist an American boy and a sir with some rare accent, he might be Spanish or English. The setting take place in a Jamaican beach were the american and this sir with rare accent that love to bet were sited, suddenly the american boy takes his lighter with his cigar, he start to smoke. The spanish man bet him, they bet because the cadet say that american lighter never fails. This bet consist in if the American boy light his lighter ten times in a row he would get a Cadillac car, but if he couldnt light his american lighter, then the sir with rare accent will chopped his pinkey.  Both accept the bet, they went to see the Cadillac if it was true and the Spanish man get the chopping knife. Finally, they start the bet, the american boy with some nervous stopped in trial 8 because it enter a woman, apparently the wife of this crazy man. She explained to the cadet that he was obsessed with betting and that he has a collection of all type of fingers. The lady taking action of his husband acts, give the American boy the Cadillac that result that was from the lady. When this honorable lady put the keys on the table the american cadet find out he was missing two of her fingers.

Roald Dahls profession is best for characterization than for imagery from my point of view, but not matter what, he would draw you an image in your mind. In this paragraph he uses very well imagery, here it is a great example:

It was a fine garden with lawns and beds of azaleas and tall coconut palms, and the wind was blowing strongly through the tops of the palm trees making the leaves hiss and crackle as though they were on fire. I could see the clusters of big brown nuts handing down underneath the leaves.

In these few sentences he uses the more common senses that almost every writer dominates at all. Dahl uses the sight and the sound to describe how tall the coconut tree is and how leaves crackle as they were on fire. Now I can definitely make a picture in my head of how this Jamaican Beach looks like.

As I mentioned earlier, Roald does a great job describing different characters of the story. To demonstrate the audience why my way of thinking, here is a clear example:

Just then I noticed a small, oldish man walking briskly around the edge of the pool. He was immaculately dressed in a white suit and he walked very quickly with little bouncing strides, pushing himself high up onto his toes with each step. He had on a large creamy Panama hat, and he came bouncing along the side of the pool, looking at the people and the chairs.

This paragraph was the greatest example of why Roald Dahl for me is better for characterization. In a not to long paragraph he describes even as how he walks. The audience by this quote can infer that this crazy sir is elegant because of his suit and his panama hat but also that he has money. To sum up, the author demonstrate the readers of how this oldish man is solvent thanks to his way of walking and looking to near people.

I think this short story leaves the audience a great message that all people should follow since it it our daily life and occurs all aorund the world. The message consist in not always trust other people because they can have other principles, way of thinking and this after all it can harm you. At first is your life and then it comes material things. To conclude, characterization and imagery is what makes the sotry interesting and also creates a desire of keeping reading.

Chapters 17-20

During the first week of school of the New Year we have find out interesting moments that we never expected to happen. The community has a holiday that’s why Jonas was walking on the street and here some shoots and kids laughing. He also sees his friends Asher and Fiona in the population. Jonas and Asher fight because Jonas has ruined the warfare game. Jonas gets mad about this situation because they didn't know what they were playing they didn't even know that this was a real global problem. Jonas ask The Giver who was the latest Receiver, her name was Rosemary. Rosemary after all the pain memories The Giver has transmitted her, she ask and pleased for a release. Jonas finally find out that a release was a death. He find out that a release was a death because he see his father on a videotape releasing a baby twin in a ceremony. After all, Jonas knew that his father was lying to him. To sum up, the new Receiver of Memories angry takes the decision to escape. He wants The Giver to go with him, but he didn't want to because he wants to spend more time with her daughter, Rosemary.

“One of the children raised and imaginary rifle and made an attempt to destroy him with a firing noise” “Pssheeew!”

This part of the book makes me think a lot of the real world. Jonas have all the right to ruin the game because they didn’t know what they were playing, the only one that know about what it is about is Jonas. He instantly relates to the memory of warfare The Giver transmitted him that’s why he reacts like this. I can infer that Jonas was very angry with everyone who was playing the game or seeing since warfare is a real world issue in which now in days the world is suffering about this situation. This quote also shows me that Jonas didn’t want them to play this game because he doesn’t wants to have any relationship with a memory that has been hidden. During my reading of these pages I knew Jonas after this situation would start to take a decision to be released or something similar. After all, Jonas never rebel the memory of warfare, he knew how to stay serene and focus on his rules.

In this few chapters there have been important events that had led to the escape Jonas and The Giver planned. As Jonas is describing his plan it sounds great because he even think of the role of The Giver. I can predict that Jonas planned would finally be successful and that the community would lose sameness. The best part of the story have been this one since in these few chapters have been the latest events of the rising action that led to the turning point. To conclude, I would like to keep reading the book because I want to know the final events and what about the life of each character.

Chapters 13-16

The chapters from 13-16 have been the best chapters so far in the book. There have been a lot of adventures between the Giver and Jonas. The new Receiver of Memories has received a lot of memories, good ones and also bad ones. Jonas helps The Giver because he takes a bit of pain of a bad memory that consists in animal poaching and also of warfare. To sum up, so far Jonas each day is upsetting more because the government have lie to them from many years ago. Know he is realizing that the world is full of problems that hurt everyone. Jonas like the memory that The Giver transmitted him since this memory was of love, friendship and worship. For first time, Jonas has experienced transmitting memories to Gabe. He transmitted calm memories to his baby brother because he was crying; he realized that Gabe could see beyond. Jonas only was able to transmit his memories to people that have blue pale eyes such as Gabe, that’s why he couldn't transmitted it to Lilly neither to Asher. The memory that Jonas like was significant for him because it consist everything on a feeling. Jonas interested and anxious in finding out why love wasn't able to say neither to feel he ask his parents. After talking with them he takes a crazy decision that was to stop taking the pills.

"There were colored lights: red and green and yellow, twinkling from a tree that was, oddly, inside the room.

This quote makes me think a lot and makes me think of some inferences. This part is when The Giver gives some great memories to the new Receiver since days ago he gave Jonas a bad and suffering memory that was war. Jonas starts to see people in a house, all together, and after all with happiness. I instantly infer that was the memory of Christmas the one that The Giver was transmitting him. Definitely, for many people this time period of the year is when everybody enjoys and has fun. It’s incredible how people like this season because everybody can see love and happiness in every house. Also, this part of the book was fundamental since Jonas starts to feel love and he decides that he would not be taking the pills anymore because he wants to feel what love is. He wants to have the same sensation as the people who had the chance to have that special moment in family and more. To conclude, this part of the book was the one that put some chili in the pot.

Sadly, the book is almost finishing. I have to say that it’s an awesome book in which I could recommend to all people. These chapters have present some rising actions in which make the story more interesting and making the reader wanting to keep reading. I can predict that Jonas will leave everything in order to stay with Fiona since know he can feels what is true love. As Jonas said, he wants his childhood again and afterall he would reach what he wants. I want to keep reading, I definitely want to know what is going to happen with Jonas and his assignment.
